Press release: No more PIN codes for container cargo from Latin America

1st phase of introduction Secure Chain in Rotterdam now completed

From now on, all participating shipping lines will only securely and reliably release import containers arriving in Rotterdam from Latin America via the Secure Chain. As of the 31st of March, customers of CMA CGM, COSCO Shipping, Maersk, MSC, ONE, OOCL and ZIM will no longer receive a PIN code. Containers from Latin America can only be collected at a terminal via the Secure Chain. In recent months, more than 100,000 containers have already been smoothly handled through this new approach.

The Secure Chain is a cooperation between the business community and authorities to digitally boost the resilience of the port logistics processes. One of its most significant components is the more secure and reliable release and collection of import containers in the Dutch ports. In a closed logistics chain that solely comprises familiar, authorised parties, companies digitally pass on the authorisation to securely collect a container at the terminal to one another. Only an inland operator that has been authorised through the Secure Chain is able to pre-notify its arrival at the terminal and next gain access. The use of PIN codes, which are susceptible to potential abuse, is eliminated.

In recent months, the shipping lines, together with their customers (shippers and forwarders) and the carriers, have worked hard to facilitate the new approach to releasing and collecting import containers from Latin America. As the deadline drew nearer, more and more parties were connected to the new process of the Secure Chain step by step via the Port Community System of Portbase. As of the 31st of March, the issuing of PIN codes for collecting containers from this shipping area has stopped completely.

Rollout of Secure Chain continues

In the next phase towards the more secure and reliable release and collection of import containers via the Secure Chain, the aforementioned shipping lines, together with Evergreen, HMM, Yang Ming (all three of which do not sail to Rotterdam from Latin America), will focus on connecting their top 100 customers. This also applies to Hapag-Lloyd (via Secure Container Release) and Marfret; due to their later participation, they will also still add customers with cargo from Latin America. Since all the major deepsea shipping lines are participating in the Secure Chain, the port of Rotterdam offers one uniform operational approach for the secure and reliable release and collection of import containers without a PIN code.

After the top 100 customers have been connected, the shipping lines will focus on the handling of import containers from all other shipping areas via the Secure Chain in an order yet to be determined.
