Three questions for Hutchison Ports Delta II: ‘We only want legit parties at our terminal’

The verification of the operating carrier at the gate of a container terminal constitutes a separate component of the Secure Chain. This takes place using EAN numbers issued by Secure Logistics. The EAN number on the CargoCard of the visiting driver must match the EAN number specified in the pre-notification of the inland operator. Only then will the driver be allowed to proceed. Hutchison Ports Delta II is one of the terminals where the introduction of this verification is a fact.

How did the introduction go for your terminal?

“The introduction went very well. After a gradual introduction, participation at Hutchison Ports Delta II is mandatory from 1 October 2024. From that date on, every inland operator must specify the EAN number in the pre-notification. Those who participates can immediately rest assured that an import container is not unintentionally collected by another party. As Hutchison Ports Delta II, we fully support the new operational approach. We only want legit parties at our terminal”

How will the new operational approach impact drivers?

“If the EAN number on the CargoCard matches the one in the pre-notification of the inland operator during the verification process at the gate, then it is business as usual for the driver. As always, they will be able to immediately proceed to the terminal. If the two numbers do not match, then the driver will have to turn around at our gate-in and contact their planner for a solution.”

What tips do you have for inland operators and drivers?

“If inland operators submit the pre-notification themselves but have another party carry out the trip, then they need to make sure that the EAN number of that executing party is specified in the pre-notification. It is important for drivers to present the correct CargoCard at the gate; this is because some drivers have more than one CargoCard. If they use the wrong CargoCard, then they will still need to exit the terminal.”
