Matrans Rotterdam Terminal in the Eemhaven will soon participate in the Secure Chain. This follows the launch of a joint weekly service from COSCO Shipping and OOCL connecting the Mediterranean Sea and Northern Europe.The two deepsea shipping lines can then also securely and reliably release their containers that arrive at Matrans for their customers and making them available for collection at the terminal. PIN codes, which are susceptible to fraud, are no longer used.
“We have adjusted our terminal system to accommodate the Secure Chain,” explains Jerry van Rijthoven of Matrans Rotterdam Terminal. “In collaboration with our software supplier and Portbase, we are currently testing extensively.” The significance of this development is plain to see. “As a terminal, we fully support the initiative. We consider the Secure Chain as a valuable addition to our security policy. It is clearly the way forward, also in terms of the safety of our own staff. Discussions are currently underway in the port about the next step: connecting the shortsea sector. The moment this become a reality, we are already prepared.”
Final step for deepsea shipping lines
Deepsea shipping line COSCO Shipping is pleased with the participation of Matrans Terminal Rotterdam. “After all the intercontinental shipping areas, we will also start securely releasing the remaining intra-European and Mediterranean cargo via the Secure Chain,” explains Erik IJntema, highlighting the importance of this for his shipping line. “For us at COSCO Shipping, this is the final step in the implementation of the new operational approach.” He has noticed that customers are satisfied as well. “Just like us, they want a uniform, efficient and secure import process without PIN codes.”
Also checks on the operating carrier
In line with the new release and collection process for containers, Matrans Rotterdam Terminal will also start verifying the operating carrier at the gate. This takes place at the central gate of the City Terminal, of which Matrans Terminal Rotterdam is a part. Through automatic verification, the EAN number on the visiting driver’s CargoCard is checked against the EAN number previously provided in the carrier’s pre-notification. Only if both numbers match does the barrier open. In this way, Matrans Terminal Rotterdam can always rest assured that only authorised personnel are granted access to the terminal.
